Each airline has their own baggage restrictions that can vary between domestic flights in the U.S., international flights, and domestic flights within your host country. AFS’ international luggage guidelines are as follows:
- 1 checked bag at 44 lbs
- 1 carry-on at 22 lbs
- 1 small personal item
These recommendations reflect the most common airline restrictions. AFS does not cover the cost of any luggage fees on any flight. Some tickets may include luggage, but it is important to verify this. The easiest way to do this is by looking on the airlines’ website. You can also call an airline representative to find out their baggage policies.
Please keep the following notes in mind:
- Most domestic airlines charge a fee for the first checked bag and a significantly higher fee for each additional bag. If you need to purchase a domestic ticket to your international departure airport, be mindful of the super economy fares that do not permit carry-on and/or checked bags.
- Some international carriers are also starting to charge for the first checked bag.
- If you must fly domestically within your host country, the luggage limit may be less than on your international flight.
- You are responsible for carrying your own luggage. You may be required to carry your luggage up or down stairs within your host country (e.g. at a train station).
- You should bring money in the case that you need to pay overweight or excess luggage fees.
You should pack the following items in your carry-on or personal item, so that they are with you at all times:
- Passport, visa (if applicable), and copies of both
- Any other required entry documents
- A copy of your international e-ticket
- Emergency contact numbers for AFS-USA and your host country
- Host family contact information and address
- Prescription medication in the original container
- Valuable items (e.g. eyeglasses, jewelry)
- Toiletry necessities (e.g. toothbrush, toothpaste, contact lens solution) in accordance with TSA regulations
- A change of clothes in case your luggage is delayed
- Chargers for your devices
- Any items requested by your host country (e.g. for the Arrival Orientation)
- Money (at least $100 USD or a debit/credit card and $100 in host country currency)
Prior to your departure, we will mail you yellow AFS luggage tags. You should write your name and host family’s address on the luggage tags and attach them to your bags. These tags will help AFS airport staff/volunteers to identify you. The AFS tags also help airport staff locate your luggage in the unfortunate event that it gets lost. Also, be sure to have your name, address, and contact information on the inside of your bags in case the external tag falls off.
